Dancing Through the Years

Is a regeneration and community art project celebrating 80 years of music and dance in Easington Social Welfare Centre.  In 2010, Accent Community & Regeneration Partnerships got together with Easington Colliery Regeneration Partnership and Easington Social Welfare Centre to come up with the project idea as part of Durham County Council's Arts Development initiative.

Bill Harris from East Durham Artists Network was commissioned to work with residents on a project which recognises the role Easington Social Welfare Centre has had in the cultural and social history of the community it serves.  8 pieces of work celebrating 8 decades of dance in the Social Welfare’s Dance Hall illustrates changing times and tastes from the 1930s to the current day.

From a mining community to a commuter village, Easington Social Welfare Centre is a place where people continue to ‘dance through the years’.  The art works were launched on Tuesday 26th October in the dance hall of Easington Social Welfare Centre, Seaside Lane, Easington Colliery, SR8 3PL.  The centre is open for them to be viewed on request.
